*PHM Funding Appeal*

Dear friend,

The People’s Health Movement (PHM) is facing a shortfall in funding. We
hope that you may be able to help.

PHM is a global network bringing together grassroots health activists,
civil society organizations and academic institutions from around the
world, particularly from low and middle income countries. It currently has
a presence in around 70 countries.

The People’s Charter for
Health<http://www.phmovement.org/en/resources/charters/peopleshealth?destination=home>sets
out the vision and philosophy of PHM.

“Equity, ecologically‐sustainable development and peace are at the heart of
our vision of a better world ‐ a world in which a healthy life for all is a
reality; a world that respects, appreciates and celebrates all life and
diversity; a world that enables the flowering of people's talents and
abilities to enrich each other; a world in which people's voices guide the
decisions that shape our lives. There are more than enough resources to
achieve this vision.”

“Health is a social, economic and political issue and above all a
fundamental human right. Inequality, poverty, exploitation, violence and
injustice are at the root of ill‐health and the deaths of poor and
marginalised people. ‘Health for All’ means that powerful interests have to
be challenged, that neoliberal globalisation must be opposed, and that
political and economic priorities have to be drastically changed.”

PHM comprises country circles, regional coalitions and affiliated global
networks. Many of the PHM activities are undertaken at the country level,
organizing around a wide variety of issues from health insurance to
extractive industries. At the global level PHM works through four main
programs, all of which are directly related to strengthening country
circles: (i) Global Health Watch; (ii) the International People’s Health
University; (iii) WHO Watch; and (iv) the Health for All Campaign. There is
much more about these programs on PHM’s various websites:
PHM<http://www.phmovement.org>,
IPHU <http://www.iphu.org>, GHW <http://www.ghwatch.org/>, and
WHO-Watch<http://www.ghwatch.org/who-watch/>
.

PHM depends overwhelmingly on volunteers but it does have a small global
secretariat and its global programs and communications do have costs. For
example, some of the recurrent costs would include website maintenance
(USD500 / month), translations of core communication into French, Spanish
and Arabic (approximately USD 1.000 / month), core costs for maintaining
production of Global Health Watch (USD 1,500/month) etc.

For such costs PHM depends on sympathetic funding agencies but following
the global financial crisis the flow of support has slowed significantly.
(For obvious reasons PHM is a bit selective in terms of the funders from
whom it is willing to ask for support.)

Please consider making an online donation to PHM; of $25, or $50, or $100
or $250 or maybe more. You can donate to PHM through a) the secure facility
on the website of Hesperian Foundation in the US or b) through cheque /
check payment or c) bank transfer to the PHM account in Belgium. Please
refer to the PHM website at http://www.phmovement.org/en/phm/donate for
further details of these options and a link to ‘Pay Online’ via the
Hesperian Foundation.

Please feel free to write to us, at globalsecretariat at phmovement.org with
questions, suggestions or comments. Your contribution at this point is
extremely critical to strengthen and take forward our work and campaign
around Health for All and other activities of PHM.

In Solidarity

David Legge and Sarojini N (Co-Chairs, PHM Steering Council)
