On 30 October 2013, PHM delegations from seven countries in East and Horn
of Africa - Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda
- together issued the Kampala Call to Action (see attached). The Kampala
Call re-emphasizes the PHM ideals and commitments outlined in the People’s
Charter for Health, the Cape Town Call to Action endorsed at the third
People’s Health Assembly (PHA3) and the East and Southern Africa PHM
statement. It further links the PHM country circle action plans to the new
PHM East Africa group, and commits to monitoring and reporting on our
progress in East Africa.
The signing ceremony for the Kampala Call to Action was covered by the
media and broadcast on the Uganda evening news.
Actions that are shared across PHM circles in East Africa include:
· Health for All - the campaign (through Health in All Policies and
other approaches);
· Health rights education and awareness, particularly at the
grassroots level;
· Advocacy for health financing, provision of healthcare services,
and prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, and other
communicable/non-communicable diseases;
· Mass mobilization for people’s health, including work towards the
global week of action in 2015 and an International People’s Health
University in our region; and
· Networking and coalition building to strengthen PHM country
circles.
At the regional level, PHM country circles committed to developing an
African voice for the post-2015 sustainable development goals and to
preparing case studies for Global Health Watch 4, WHO Watch and AFRO Watch,
and to planning a second IPHU in the region.
