For 20 years, the Human Development Report (HDR) has used the Human
Development Index (HDI) to measure human development by averaging a small
set of simple indicators of health, education and living standards. When
launched, the HDI made a simple yet powerful statement: development is about
much more than income. It is easy to forget that back then the World Bank’s
World Development Report published a ranking of countries ordered by per
capita income (seven years later, the Bank would shift to alphabetical
ordering). The HDI was thus novel and innovative.

Avons–nous encore besoin de l’IDH ? (par Francisco R. Rodríguez)

Pendant 20 ans, le Rapport mondial sur le Développement humain (RMDH) a
utilisé l’Indice de Développement humain (IDH) pour mesurer le développement
humain en faisant la moyenne d’une petite série d’indicateurs simples sur la
santé, l’éducation et les niveaux de vie. A l’occasion de sa présentation,
l’IDH a avancé un principe simple mais puissant : le développement
représente beaucoup plus que les simples revenus. Il est facile d’oublier
qu’à l’époque le Rapport sur le Développement dans le Monde de la Banque
mondiale avait publié un classement des pays selon le revenu par habitant
(sept ans plus tard, la Banque allait passer à un classement alphabétique).
L’IDH était donc nouveau et novateur.

Durante 20 años, el Informe sobre Desarrollo Humano (IDH) ha utilizado el
Índice de Desarrollo Humano (HDI) para medir el desarrollo humano mediante
un pequeño conjunto de indicadores simples de salud, educación y estándares
de vida. El HDI se presentó con una sencilla a la vez que poderosa
afirmación: el desarrollo es mucho más que el nivel de ingresos. Es fácil
olvidar que, por aquel entonces, el Informe sobre Desarrollo Mundial del
Banco Mundial publicó una clasificación de países ordenados por ingresos per
cápita, aunque siete años después, el Banco cambiaría a una clasificación
alfabética. En aquel contexto, el HDI fue novedoso e innovador.
