PHM-USA and Oxfam International are cosponsoring two events in Washington
DC on February 11th and 12th, 2009.

health care: what role for the private sector?
Venue: The World Bank, Room J1-050 (ground floor at 701 18th St, through

Achieving universal access to health care and fulfilling the right to health
requires a massive expansion of health services in poor countries. The
critical question is how such a scale up can be achieved?

This event brings together advocates from diverse perspectives to critically
assess the evidence available on the role of the public and private sectors
in health care delivery. It will focus on what really works to achieve
universal and equitable access to health care and to fulfill the right to
health.

At the event Oxfam will launch its new briefing paper ³Blind Optimism:
Challenging the myths about private health care in poor countries.² PHM-US
will highlight the Global Health Watch 2. Other participants will also
present their research and evidence on the issue.

Speakers:
Anna Marriot, Health Policy Advisor, Oxfam GB
Dr. David McCoy, People¹s Health Movement
Dr. Mukesh Chawla, Health Economist and Sector Manager, Health, Nutrition,
and Population Department, World Bank

February 12th, 12 2 pm: A special NGO discussion on The Private Sector in
Health Care: Myths and Alternatives
Oxfam Conference Room
1100 15th Street NW, Suite #600
Washington DC 20005

As people in both rich and poor countries struggle to achieve universal
access to health care and fulfill the right to health, a growing number of
international institutions and donors promote private-sector health-care
delivery as the solution. What is the evidence for and against private
health care and what are the alternatives?

Come with your stories and experiences in supporting/strengthening health
systems. What are the appropriate roles and responsibilities of NGOs with
regard to the private and public sectors? How can Washington DC based NGOs
better work together to support public health system strengthening,
especially in low- and middle-income countries?

Oxfam will present its new Briefing Paper ³Blind Optimism: Challenging the
myths about private health care in poor countries.² PHM will outline the
alternative vision for health systems strengthening and development
contained in Global Health Watch 2: An Alternative World Health Report.
