As people in both rich and poor countries struggle to achieve universal access to health care and fulfill the right to health, a growing number of international institutions and donors promote private-sector health-care delivery as the solution. What is the evidence for and against private health care and what are the alternatives?

Come with your stories and experiences in supporting/strengthening health systems. What are the appropriate roles and responsibilities of NGOs with regard to the private and public sectors? How can Washington DC based NGOs better work together to support public health system strengthening, especially in low- and middle-income countries?

Oxfam will present its new Briefing Paper “Blind Optimism: Challenging the myths about private health care in poor countries.” PHM will outline the alternative vision for health systems strengthening and development contained in Global Health Watch 2: An Alternative World Health Report.
