Dear PHM members,

Around the world, activists are urging governments to ratify and
implement the first global health treaty, formally known as the
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Public health and
corporate accountability advocates have made tremendous progress toward
ensuring the global tobacco treaty's life-saving impact. With nearly 140
countries having ratified the global tobacco treaty, it now protects
more than 75% of the world's population.

This week, activists in more than 20 countries will organize events as
part of the 8th International Week of Resistance to Tobacco
Transnationals (IWR2006) organized by the Network for Accountability of
Tobacco Transnationals (NATT). This week's events coincide with the
International Release of the Global Tobacco Treaty Action Guide:
Challenging Tobacco Industry Interference
<http://www.stopcorporateabuse.org/cms/page1167.cfm> , produced by
Corporate Accountability International and NATT.

The Global Tobacco Treaty Action Guide is a collection of first-hand
stories about how tobacco transnationals are attempting to interfere
with health policy and what government officials and NGOs are doing to
expose and challenge this interference. We hope that you will access
your copy of the Global Tobacco Treaty Action Guide in English, French
or Spanish at www.stopcorporateabuse.org
<http://www.stopcorporateabuse.org> .

We invite you to join IWR2006 by organizing an event in your country. To
share a story of interference in your country or for more information on
how to get involved in working on the global tobacco treaty, please
contact Megan Rising at mrising at stopcorporateabuse.org. We look forward
to hearing from you!

Onward,
Megan
