GLOBAL: "US House Panel Trims Bush's Pet Foreign Aid Plan"
Reuters    (06.16.05):: Vicki Allen

On Thursday in Washington, the House Appropriations foreign aid subcommittee
unanimously approved a $20.3 billion foreign aid bill that includes $1.75
billion for the Millennium Challenge Account, $1.25 billion less than
President Bush had requested. One day earlier, Paul Applegarth resigned his
post as CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corp. But the spending bill includes
a total of $2.7 billion to fight AIDS, TB and malaria - $131 million more
than Bush requested and $502 million above current levels. The US
contribution it sets for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria is
$400 million - double the administration's request.
