Arrest of Palestinian health coordinator; no motive given

Last Monday night, June 6, Dr. Ahmad Maslamani was arrested in front of
his children by Israeli security forces at his home in Jerusalem. The
Israeli security forces didn’t provide any motive for his arrest. Even
when Dr. Maslamani was brought before an Israeli court on Wednesday
morning, no charges were filed against him. Meanwhile, he remains in
detention.

Dr. Maslamani is in charge of the health projects of the Health Work
Committees (HWC) in the Occupied Territories and Jerusalem, and a member
of the Coordinating Committee of PNGO, the umbrella of Palestinian NGOs.
HWC delivers health services in 60 towns and villages in Palestine and
is a partner organisation of Oxfam-Solidarity Belgium and Medical Aid
for the Third World (Belgium). A relief programme, funded by the Flemish
government, is still on-going, while another project for emergency aid
is yet to be approved by the Belgian federal government. Last month, Dr.
Maslamani was in Belgium on a working visit.

Oxfam-Solidarity and Medical Aid for the Third World vehemently protest
this unmotivated arrest, and demand that the internationally recognized
rules of law and the rights of the defense be respected. They demand the
federal and Flemish authorities to intervene in the same sense before
the Israeli government.

Bert de Belder, Coordinator of Medical Aid for the Third World
