Wemos would like to invite you to the seminar

'Solution or Disillusion
Can we make global public private partnerships work for health?'
Thursday November 4th 2004

>From 9.30 until 14.00 in Dudok, Hofweg 1a, The Hague

Health related institutions of the United Nations such as the WHO,
Unicef and UNAIDS are increasingly appealing to companies and rich
individuals such as Bill Gates to provide funds and other resources
for the improvement of people's health in poor countries. Together
with national governments they are engaging in a growing number of so-
called Global Public Private Initiatives or partnerships (GPPI's).
The collaboration with corporations brings opportunities to set up
programmes that were unaffordable before. For governments in
developing countries it offers resources to fight widespread diseases
like AIDS and malaria. The question however is whether the present
GPPIs are an effective way to improve people's health. Moreover there
is a growing concern about the increasing influence of the corporate
sector on international health policy.

During the past year, partners of Wemos in six developing countries
have carried out case studies in order to shed light on the
performance of some GPPIs programmes at country level and the
consequences of these programmes for local health systems. The case
studies have been completed and will be presented at the seminar.
Wemos would like to use the results to discuss partnerships as a
means to promote health in developing countries.
