Dear
Friends,
Secretariat Communication
August 12, 2004
Reg: PHM Pakistan Circle
Greetings from PHM Secretariat (Global)!
Dr. B. Ekbal, National Convener of PHM India and I visited Pakistan for a week
from 5th July to 12th July at the invitation of The Network for Consumer
Protection - the PHM Pakistan contact point to help launch the PHM circle in
Pakistan. We had a series of meetings with NGOs, civil society, academic,
policy makers and health professionals and the people in Islamabad, Karachi
and Lahore.
A detailed report of the visit is now posted on the website of the network at
http://www.thenetwork.org.pk/phm.htm.
The highlights of the visit were:
1.. The People's Charter for Health in English (local Pakistani Version) and
in Urdu and Sindhi languages were released during this visit.
2.. A process has begun to strengthen the PHM circle by evolving a Pakistan
People's Charter for Health.
3.. The Pakistan Medical Association has shown interest to actively
participate in the process and may endorse this charter at its National
meeting in December 2004. They are surprisingly already in the forefront of
the campaign against privatization of Health Care in Pakistan (an unusual but
significant professional association)
4.. There are possibilities emerging to link the PHM Pakistan process to
local cultural and social movements that would enhance the people's
participation in the movement.
5.. PHM Pakistan has evinced interest in hosting a South Asian Assembly
early next year before PHA - II. It may be possible to have PHM delegations
from Central Asia and Middle East also to attend this as a bi-regional event.
6.. As part of the Pakistan - India people to people dialogue; this was a
good beginning for PHM members and health professionals to join the process of
peace and sustainable development and a movement against militarization and
conflict.
7.. The Mahbubul Haque Human Development Center, Islamabad, is writing its
next Human Development in South Asia 2004 report on the theme 'Health in Asia'
and has agreed to include the Charter and case studies, reports and evidence
from PHM related groups in Asia (A separate communication will follow).
8.. All PHM members and circles who would like to contact and involve PHM
Pakistan in their work are requested to write to Talib Lashari of the Network,
who will be the focal point for PHM Pakistan (talib at thenetwork.org.pk).
Best wishes
Ravi Narayan
