Subject: [HIF-net at WHO] Human resources for health in Africa

Greetings from Accra.

The WHO is trying to find and collate information on experiences with
countries that have produced health staff/cadres such as Medical
Assistants, Assistant Medical Officers and Clinical Officers, or
Anaesthetic Nurse/Assistants/Officers, Surgical health technicians
etc, with specific skills for health interventions and who have
substituted for Doctors & professional Nurses (and have had a shorter
period of training). (In Mozambique for example, we understand a 3-
year programme has been started to train medical assistants
(assistant medical officers) to perform surgical interventions in
underserved areas. Similar programmes (eg; Assistant medical
Officers, Clinical Officers, medical Assistants, Surgical technicians
etc) we understand, have been tried in other countries - Tanzania,
Malawi, Burkina Faso, and Zambia.)

I would like to get any reports in which the training and work of
such health workers have been described or reviewed. Also I would
love to have copies of curricula and reports from schools training
such cadres. I will also like addresses/fax numbers/emails of such
schools or people who have done such work and who can help me with
some information.

Our aim is to identify and describe experiences with substitutions of
skills in the health care workforce in African countries. Any
evaluations of such cadres are requested. Hardcopies are welcome and
will cover cost of postage/courier though of course email-copies will
be better. Also any information as to where such data may be
available
will also help to enable support for a sustained HRH - an area of
emerging crisis in the region.

or guide me to sources.

Any other information on Human Resources for Health in Africa is
welcome.

We have also been working in Africa to develop a network of African
HRH experts to enable better support to countries in the region. This
Advisory Group on Human Resources for Health which is attempting to
collate evidence of successful practice in HRd and share with the
countries of the region.

Thanks and best regards

Dr. Delanyo Dovlo
