Dear All,

There is growing recognition internationally that the lessons of
health and development often fail to be communicated to policy makers
in a meaningful way. Health researchers often fail to reach their
intended audience - not because their work is unimportant, but rather
because, as the Canadian IDRC put it:

"the insights generated through research and development may not
realise their potential to inform, guide or spur action because they
are not communicated in a way that is meaningful to target audiences.
... [researchers and development workers need] to build their
capacity
to communicate results in ways that promote action based on evidence
and social relevance."

This was the reason that Fahamu published 'Writing for change' - both
on CDROM and as a website - as a way of contributing to strengthening
people's ability to write effectively. We have also run workshops in
different parts of the world. But, we have not been convinced that
such self-learning manuals or workshops are particularly good ways of
developing effective writing skills.

So, we decided we would develop a online course that can really help
individuals to build up effective writing skills over a period of a
few weeks.

I thought that hif-netters might, therefore, be interested in the
following information, especially as this online course - JustWrite -
provides health workers an opportunity to develop effective writing
skills without absenting themselves from work, and yet still benefit
from extensive professional guidance.

JustWrite - an online course on effective writing

Is your writing getting the results you want?

Perhaps you find writing a chore. Perhaps you know what you want to
say, but not how to say it. Perhaps you need to polish your skills.

If so, then JustWrite is just what you need.

JustWrite is a unique online learning experience, created for anybody
needing to write powerful, persuasive documents.

JustWrite is ideal for anybody producing a:

* research report;
* thesis;
* book or book chapter;
* advocacy document;
* paper for publication;
* essay;

- or any other substantial piece of writing.

In three intensive weeks, JustWrite will guide you from conception to
final draft, covering the key areas of:

* planning;
* outlining;
* writing a first draft; and
* editing to create a final version.

The course combines study material, stimulating interactive
exercises,
lively online discussion with your fellow participants and -
crucially
- individual tuition. Study is broken down into daily hour-long
slots,
making the course suitable for those in full time employment.

You will also be able to produce a real document, using a series of
closely marked assignments.

You will be supplied with a free, specially designed CDROM,
containing
all the study materials you will need, including interactive
exercises
and assignments. It also contains sections on grammar, punctuation
and stylistic issues - together with a reading list and guides to
further study - making it an invaluable reference tool after you have
completed the course.

Alan Barker, MA Cantab, has written the course and will be your
online
tutor. Alan has written fourteen books, including Writing at Work
(Industrial Society, 1999). He is also the author of two previous
CDROMs, Write Now! (Capita Learning and Development, 2003), and
Writing for Change (Fahamu & IDRC, 2000). The course director, Dr
Firoze Manji, is Director of Fahamu and Visiting Fellow, Kellogg
College, University of Oxford.

The next online course begins on 14 July 2003. You can be anywhere
in
the world to benefit from this course; you only need access to a
computer and email. Places are limited, so book early. Or reserve a
place on a course in September, October and November 2003.

Requirements: Computer (PC or Mac) with CDROM drive and minimum of
64MB RAM; email address.
