<p></p>
<p>The Indian government has tightened regulation of sales of over the counter (OTC) antibiotics following widespread domestic and global concern over growing antibiotic resistance in the country.</p>
<p>In late August this year the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, through an official notification, brought 24 antibiotics under a new ‘Schedule H1’ category of drugs, whose sale without a doctor’s prescription could attract significant penalties. Pharmacists now have to document details of the patient, the actual drug and the prescriber in a separate register, subject to regular inspections by drug control officials.</p>

<p>More than 230 participants came together for the Asia Pacific Conference on National Medicines Policies (APCNMP) in Sydney in May 2012 to share progress in implementing National Medicines Policies in the Asia Pacific region. The final report of this conference and the session summaries are now available.</p>

<h2>FIRST MEETING OF THE WHO ADVISORY GROUP ON ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE</h2>

<p>As part of its core functions, WHO has called together a Strategic and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) to review and help shape a global strategy to tackle the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and to advise WHO on the coordination role it should be playing in the fight against AMR. The first meeting of the STAG group was held on September 19.</p>

<h2>CDC´S FIRST REPORT ON ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE THREATS IN THE US</h2>

<p>Every year, more than two million people in the United States get infections that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die as a result, according to a new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p>
