<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">I write to update us all on the event at PHA 3 (Third People’s
Health Assembly ) that took place at the University of the Western Cape, Cape
Town between 6<sup>th</sup> and 11<sup>th</sup> of July, 2012. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>The sessions<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">The opening session (6<sup>th</sup> of July) took place in
the afternoon and this had in attendance the Rector of the UWC and also the
Minister of Health for the Republic of South Africa. He gave the opening
remarks stating the current health reforms going on in RSA under the current ministry
of health administration. The opening also witnessed cultural events.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">The first technical session (7<sup>th</sup> of July) was on
the second day and it focused on ‘The Global Political and Economic context of
health’. We have a number of speakers during plenary that spoke from their
regional and country perspective. There were sub plenary sessions that saw
participants attending session of interest. The details of the different sub
plenary session can be found in the attached PHA3 program structure. But for a

<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">The second technical day (8<sup>th</sup> of July) focussed
on ‘Social and Physical Environment that destroy or promote health’. Just like
the first technical day started with the general plenary session and also sub
plenary sessions after.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">The third technical day (9<sup>th</sup> of July) focussed on
‘Health for All now: universal coverage and equity in integrated health systems’.
The day also witnessed the general plenary session and also sub-plenaries
after.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">The fifth day (10<sup>th</sup> of July) which is the fourth
technical session was on “Beyond the current crisis: mobilizing for health for
now). The day also came with sub-plenaries.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>Self organized activities<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">From the second day of PHA3, the self organized activities
featured every evening between the hours of 17h00 and 19h00. There are about 13
self organized activities (workshops) on the first technical day (7<sup>th</sup>
of July).</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">We as People’s Health Network initiative Nigeria (PHM
Nigeria) did submit a proposal in collaboration with the PHM Ghana to organize
a workshop on ‘Universal Access to Immunization and Maternal Newborn &
Child Healthcare. This workshop was successfully delivered on the 7<sup>th</sup>
of July, 2012. We had like 30 participants in attendance including Prof. David Sanders
and a UNICEF representative at the PHA.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Preparation toward self organized: we were able to get our
banners to Cape Town for this self activity, and also got some workshop
materials across to all participants.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Publication: there was PHA3 Newsletters that were published
for the duration of the PHA3. PHM Nigeria was able to get the summary of our
self organized workshop published in an edition (please check the <a href="http://www.phmovement.org/en/node/6538">http://www.phmovement.org/en/node/6538</a>
for the newsletters, emphasis on No.3 and No.5). we also have a pix of our
banners on a page.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>PHM Regional/Country Meetings<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">The evening of 7<sup>th</sup>, 8<sup>th</sup> and 9<sup>th</sup>
from 20h00 witnessed the PHM circles meetings for participating countries. There
was a general meeting on the first day while the subsequent days witnessed the
regional meetings. The Central and West African PHM circles came together for
this purpose. Some output from this meeting is the acceptance of the Ghanian
Rudolf Abugnaba-Abanga as the representative for the West and Central Africa on
the PHM Steering Committee. Beyond this we came up with our regional statement
toward the Cape Town Call for Action (all these will be shared in a follow up

<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>Cape Town Call for Action<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#323232;background:white">The draft Cape
Town Call to Action (the output of the PHA3) was discussed in daily workshops
throughout the People's Health Assembly in Cape Town from July 6 to 11, 2012.
The final draft was discussed in the assembly's final plenary on July 11. The
draft is now left open for comments and suggestions for another month. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: rgb(50, 50, 50); background-color: white; ">The draft can

<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>The March to Parliament<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">On the last day of PHA3, the participants were all taken to
Cape Town central district and we all marched to the Parliament as a sign of campaign
to Universal Access to Health. At the parliament, the mesaage of the PHA3
march/campaign was delivered and we all went back to close the assembly at
plenary.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>Pictures at PHA3<o:p></o:p></u></div>

<div class="MsoNormal"><u><br></u></div><div class="MsoNormal"><u>Representation at PHA 3<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">We were suppose to be like six representatives at PHA3 from
Nigeria. However, only two of us made it to Cape Town (Nkiru Celine okoro and
Gbenga Adedayo). Issues like visa delay, late planning and circumstances beyond
human control were responsible for this. Though, status of one expected participant
(Ndodeye Bassey) on this could not be ascertained up till now.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal"><u>Next Steps<o:p></o:p></u></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">We shall be discussing nest steps for PHM Nigeria in the
coming week. So please stay in touch and please commit yourself to this dream
of pushing our government to achieving health for all. <span style="font-weight: bold;">We can focus on getting
the president to sign the Health Bill</span>. <span style="font-size: 12pt; ">We can start a social network campaign in the coming week.
Please let us all study and see the benefit in the bill for all and let us come
