<p class="MsoNormal">HREA and the Human Rights Centre of the UN-mandated
University for Peace are offering short certificate course on <b><a href="http://www.hrea.org/health-human-rights" target="_blank">Health and Human Rights</a></b>
from 16 May-26 June 2012. There are still a few places available in the course.<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u></u> <u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This e-learning course introduces participants to the doctrinal,
actual and policy related linkages between health and human rights, and the
contemporary challenges associated with them. Participants will explore the
normative concepts of the right to health as a human right and will also study
the intersections between the human right to health on the one hand and some of
the other human rights such as the right to life, food, work, development etc.
on the other. In addition, participants will explore some of the most important
contemporary and emerging issues in the field, and will analyse the role of the
international organisations and national governments in framing and
implementing appropriate health policies.<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u></u> <u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The main objectives of the course are to make the
participants aware of the different facets of the linkages between health and
human rights and the associated challenges; to develop the knowledge necessary
for critical analysis of the existing international and national policies
affecting health; and to acquaint the participants with tools that can be
employed in order to mainstream and address issues concerning health in policy
making. Throughout the course, participants will engage in case studies
including decisions of various national, regional and international courts of
law on the relevant topics. Although gender aspects of health and human rights
linkages will be a subject of direct focus in some of the topics covered, the
same will also be generally mainstreamed throughout the course. Similarly,
several of the topics covered will critically analyse the role of transnational
corporations as well as the role of civil society within the health and human
rights linkages.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Week 2: Sexual and reproductive rights; health and human
rights linkages in the context of violence against physical integrity of human
beings<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Week 3: HIV/AIDS, other infectious diseases and human rights<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Week 4: Mental and physical disabilities, health and human
rights<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Week 5: Globalisation and the human right to health
including implications of international trade, intellectual property rights and
labour<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Week 6: Health as a development issue: human development
policies, Millennium Development Goals and health<u></u><u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u></u> <u></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This e-learning course involves approximately 40 hours of
reading, interaction with students and instructors on discussion boards,
quizzes and webinars. The course is based on a participatory, active learning
approach, with an emphasis on critical reflection and peer-to-peer learning.
The maximum number of course participants is 25. Students who successfully
complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation. It is also
possible to audit the course.<u></u><u></u></p>
