<div><br>The Learning Network is a collaboration of Civil Society Organisations and researchers working to identify and share best practice for realising the Right to Health. The approach of the LN is that the Right to Health cannot be realised without the active participation of civil society in ensuring a responsive and accountable health system.</div>

<p style="LINE-HEIGHT:normal;MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal">Health Committees are recognised in South Africa as serving as the interface between the community and the health services, and play a potentially critical role in realising the vision contained in the Primary Health Care approach – particularly in ensuring meaningful community participation and the realisation of health as a right. The LN has been working with an umbrella body for Health Committees in the Western Cape to identify obstacles and opportunities to ensure local level structures are able ensure community input and oversight to services in ways that advance the realisation of health as a right. </p>
<p style="LINE-HEIGHT:normal;MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal"><u></u><u></u></p>
<p style="LINE-HEIGHT:normal;MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal">We want to share this experience with others doing similar work in other parts of the globe, so as to build a community of practice around making health committee work for human rights. The workshop will afford opportunities for participants who are interest to share their experiences in relation to the four main themes of the PHA: 1) How global political and economic context impacts on local participation; 2) How Health Committee can act as vehicles to address the Social (meaning here both ‘social’ and ‘physical’) Determinants of Health; 3) How Health committees can facilitate universal access and equity in comprehensive services; 4) How health committees can support civil society moblisation for Health for All. We envisage participants from different organisations and different countries sharing experiences in these themes and invite you to indicate where and how you might be interested in contributing and whether you would like to co-host this workshop stream in the PHA. </p>

<p style="LINE-HEIGHT:normal;MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal">Advocacy and training material supporting the right to health are commonly assumed to be helpful in advancing claims for the right to health by community members. But often, materials developed are not used in ways speak to the real needs or experiences of people most affected by violations for their rights to health, and are not designed with action in mind.<span> </span>Materials that rely only on information are likely to be less effective, if effective at all. </p>
<p style="LINE-HEIGHT:normal;MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal"><u></u><u></u></p>
<p style="LINE-HEIGHT:normal;MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt" class="MsoNormal">The LN has developed, through a collaboration with civil society organisations and researchers over the past 4 years, a set of pamphlets and a toolkit on the right to health to support CSO action for the right to health, which have been used in different ways to strengthen the agency of civil society organisations to defend and claim the right to health. We would like to share these experiences with, and hear from other PHM groups, concerning the effective use of materials to support Right to Health claims by people and organisations most affected by rights violations. </p>
