*Increasing Awareness of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) by Supporting
Community Actions *

*By Mirza Alas*

The yearly global campaign World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is
part of the global efforts to increase awareness and actions to tackle AMR.
For 2022, WAAW took place from 18 to 24 November. The WAAW 2022 theme was
“Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together”. One of the critical actors
in mobilising local action to address AMR are civil society organisations
(CSOs). The South Centre has been committed to supporting the efforts of
CSOs based in developing countries. For WAAW 2022, the South Centre, with
support from the Fleming Fund, offered small grants to fourteen CSOs to
design and launch awareness and education campaigns on AMR. The
organisations selected were: *Ducit Blue Foundation, RBA-Initiative,
LaBESTA team/University of Joseph KI-ZERBO, Africa Public Health Student
Network Initiative, Talk AB[M]R-Talking Resistance, Observatory For The
Quality And Safety Of Care, MUSUHUM, Great Lakes Peace Center, Women and
Youth Empowerment in Health and Development, Tanzania Pharmaceutical
Students’ Association, Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, Tanzania Veterinary
Student Association, Coalition of Farmers of Ghana and Red de Acceso a
Medicamentos.*

These initiatives from these organisations were selected based on their
applications to an open call and assessment of their proposals for targeted
awareness-raising campaigns. Below is a summary of the initiatives carried
out by the fourteen organisations.
