Sharing the launch of BHRRC's annual analysis of attacks against human
rights defenders (HRDs) raising concerns about harmful business practices.
The analysis shows that environmental, land rights, climate and labour
rights defenders – the very people on the frontlines of driving a just
transition – are under sustained attack related to their human rights and
environmental protection work.

people driving a just transition” <https://bit.ly/3DFnpiL>
   - Investor briefing - “Protecting people & the planet in 2021: Why
investors should better support defenders driving the just transition to
   green economies” <https://bit.ly/3uaXkVq>

Key takeaways include:

   - In 2021, we recorded *615 *such attacks worldwide - with 70% taking
place against climate, land and environmental rights defenders.
   - In 2021, the top five most dangerous sectors for HRDs were all related
   to *natural resources*.
   - The *mining sector* has consistently been the most dangerous sector
for HRDs for the past seven years, followed by agribusiness.
   - Attacks against HRDs take place in *every region* of the world, with
Latin America and Asia and the Pacific being the most dangerous regions for
defenders since we began tracking in 2015.
   - In 2021, the *highest numbers of attacks* occurred in India (49),
Mexico (47) and the Philippines (44).
   - Indigenous peoples face a disproportionately high level of
attacks. Although
Indigenous peoples comprise approximately 5% of the world’s population,
*18%* of attacks globally in 2021 were against Indigenous HRDs. The
percentage is much higher in some regions, such as Latin America, where two
in five attacks were against Indigenous defenders. In *Brazil*, it
was *nearly
   half. *
   - *Judicial harassment* was the most common type of attack against HRDs
in 2021, demonstrating how businesses and states are increasingly abusing
the judicial system to try to intimidate HRDs into silence. Judicial
harassment constituted *60%* of attacks against HRDs in 2021, compared
   with just 30% in 2015.

These figures point to a concerning lack of understanding by the business
community of the crucial role HRDs play in driving the just transition and
a failure to conduct robust environmental and human rights due diligence.
Numerous companies and investors have made public commitments to climate
action, yet have failed to conduct meaningful engagement with HRDs and
their communities, including Indigenous peoples, prior to launching
operations on their lands.
