Dear friends,

Following are the details of a panel discussion "Solidarity with
Palestinians: transcending race, religion and national boundaries". Please
join.

*Israel as Apartheid state: What now?*
In July 2020, the Israeli human rights organisation Yesh Din, published a
legal report *The Occupation of the West Bank and the Crime of Apartheid:
Legal Opinion.* In January 2021, another Israeli human rights group
B’Tselem published a position paper entitled *A regime of Jewish supremacy
from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is apartheid*. This
was followed by yet another publication* A Threshold Crossed: Israeli
Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution* by Human Rights
Watch three months later.

These developments are significant albeit belated acknowledgements of what
Palestinian intellectuals and rights groups have long been articulating on
behalf of the Palestinian resistance.

What are the legal (and political) implications, of an official designation
of *apartheid*?

In 1973, the UN declared that acts of *apartheid* constituted* a crime
under international law*, through the Convention on the Suppression and
Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid.

In 2002, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court designated
the crime of *apartheid* as a “*crime against humanity*”, understood as
comprising* “inhumane acts … committed in the context of an
institutionalised regime of systematic oppression and domination by one
racial group over any other racial group”.*

*United in Struggle for a Democratic (Bi-national) One State?*
Aroused by the recent Sheikh Jarrah expulsions, Gazans living in
Hamas-controlled areas, Palestinians living under the Fatah-led Palestinian
Authority in West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Palestinians with Israeli
citizenship living in the Green Line areas have revolted against the
Zionist state in a dramatic upsurge and show of unity from the Jordan River
to the Mediterranean.

To discuss these momentous developments, the organisers have convened a
panel of speakers whose wealth of experience span the historical context of
Israel’s foundation (1948) and the concurrent *Nakba *of ethnic cleansing
and expulsion, refugee camps in Beirut and relief efforts for Gaza and the
occupied territories, life under Zionist occupation, and BDS efforts in
solidarity with Palestine.

*Dr Ang Swee Chai* is the first female orthopaedic consultant appointed to
the St Bartholomew and the Royal London Hospitals. She served as a
volunteer surgeon in the Sabra & Shatila refugee camps (Beirut) and in Gaza
and the West Bank. In 1987, President Yasser Arafat awarded Dr Ang the *Star
of Palestine*, the highest award for service to the Palestinian people.
*Professor Ilan Pappé* was born in Haifa to German Jewish parents who fled
Nazi persecution in the 1930s. He is the world’s leading historian on the
events surrounding 1948 in Palestine/Israel and is the author of *The
Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine* (2006). He currently directs the University
of Exeter’s European Centre for Palestine Studies
*Dr Azzam Tamimi* is a British-Palestinian writer, analyst and commentator.
Up until 2008, he was Director of the London-based Institute of Islamic
Political Thought. Between 2004 and 2006, he was visiting professor at
Kyoto and Nagoya universities, and in July 2006 he co-founded the
London-based Alhiwar Arabic satellite TV channel.
*Professor Nazari Ismail* is a professor of business studies at the
University of Malaya, and a Fulbright scholar at the University of Michigan
at Ann Arbor in 2000. In 2018, he participated in one of the European legs
of the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza. He is currently chairman of BDS Malaysia.
*Affaf Al-najjar *is a Palestinian student of English literature at the
Islamic University of Gaza. She is also a writer at a Gaza-based
organization* We Are Not Numbers*. In the 18 years of her life, she has
endured four major attacks on Gaza by Zionist occupation forces.
