The WHO Global Diabetes Summit<https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2021/04/14/default-calendar/global-diabetes-summit>, organized jointly by WHO and the Government of Canada, in close collaboration with the University of Toronto, will take place on 14 April 2021. The WHO Global Diabetes Compact will be launched at the Summit. The Summit will be live-streamed at www.youtube.com/who<http://www.youtube.com/who> (no registration required).

Diabetes constitutes one of the major challenges for development in the 21st century, which undermines socio-economic development in developing countries.

  * Diabetes is a global epidemic. Today, more than 420 million people are living with diabetes worldwide. This is 6% of the world population. It is also four times more than in 1980. This number is estimated to rise to 570 million by 2030 and to 700 million by 2045.
  * People living with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 and are among the most impacted by pandemic
  * 1 in 2 adults with diabetes are unaware of their status. 4 out 5 adults with undiagnosed diabetes live in developing countries. Persons unaware of their status are at great risk of debilitating complications.
  * Only about 50% of people with diabetes get the insulin they need, often because their country’s health systems cannot afford it. Less than half of low-income countries have general availability of insulin in the public sector.
  * Pathways analysis shows that every country has options, but no country could do this by a single intervention. Access to insulin is necessary, but it is not sufficient to make a difference in screening, early diagnosis, and appropriate diabetes care in many low-income countries.
  * Basic technologies such as blood glucose testing are not available in the public sector primary health care in the 50 poorest countries. Limited access in many developing countries to health professionals in primary health care trained in diabetes means that the diabetes epidemic will continue with high numbers of unscreened, undiagnosed, untreated and uncontrolled cases.

The Summit has three segments:

  *   14 April 2021 from 17:00 to 19:00 (Geneva time): A first segment primarily for governments, donors, non-state actors and people living with diabetes;
  * 14 April 2021 from 19:00 to 21:00 (Geneva time): A second segment on operationalizing meaningful engagement of people living with diabetes; and
  * 14 April 2021 from 22:30 (Geneva time) onwards: A third segment for people living with diabetes entitled ‘100 Years of Insulin ̶ Celebrating Its Impact on Our Lives’ organized by the University of Toronto.

More information is available on the WHO Global Diabetes Summit event page<https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2021/04/14/default-calendar/global-diabetes-summit>. The WHO Global Diabetes Compact webpage will be going live next week featuring resources on the newly launched initiative. In the meantime, a presentation<https://www.who.int/publications/m/item/introducing-the-global-diabetes-compact> sets out the major obstacles to bringing diabetes care to all who need it and describes the contours of the Compact, which aims to address those challenges.

Please join us on 14 April 2021.

Thanks,
Menno
