Call from the Global South to Rich Countries: Don't block the waiver
proposal



Civil society and trade unions from the Global South are calling on leaders
of high-income countries not to block adoption of the proposal to the WTO
to temporarily waive certain IP requirements of the TRIPS Agreement to
facilitate effective prevention, containment, and treatment of COVID-19.

*On Monday, 15 February*, a collective Global South open letter on the
waiver is being sent to countries that are obstructing the process,
including to the representatives of the European Commission, United States,
United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Norway,
Danemark, Canada, Japan and Australia.  The letters will be available on
the websites of *People's Health Movement* <https://phmovement.org/>, *Third
World Network* <https://www.twn.my/> and *Public Services International*
<https://publicservices.international/> on Monday.

*On Tuesday, 16 February*, the letters will be also shared with policy
makers of the target countries that are blocking the TRIPS Waiver via
Twitter from the Twitter handles of *@3rdworldnetwork*
<https://twitter.com/3rdworldnetwork>; *@PHMglobal*
<https://twitter.com/PHMglobal> and *@PSIglobalunion*
<https://twitter.com/PSIglobalunion> at *10 am local time *of the
respective countries, with our common hashtag: *#NoCovidMonopolies*

How can you join the action?

We call on all civil society and trade unions to join the action on Tuesday
16 February to retweet the common set of Tweets, which includes handles of
the blocking country and handles of our allies to amplify the voices of
civil society across the world.

* When to join *

*People and organisations in target countries* are requested to join the
Twitter action at 10am local time and target their own government.

*People and organisations in countries of the Global South* are requested
to join in as many time slots as convenient based on the local time in
Canberra (GMT+11), Tokyo (GMT +9), Brussels (GMT+1), London (GMT 0),
Washington/Ottawa (GMT-5).

For instance:

   -  Someone based in New Delhi, (GMT +5:30 hours) can join the action
   at 4:30 am on Tuesday 16 Feb to retweet messages to Australia,  2:30 pm on
   Tuesday 16 Feb to retweet messages to the EU and other European countries,
   3:30 pm on Tuesday 16 Feb to retweet messages to UK , 8:30 pm on Tuesday 16
   Feb to retweet messages to USA and Canada.
   - Someone based in Johannesburg (GMT+2) can join the action at 11 am to
   retweet the letters/msgs to the EU and other European countries, at 12
   noon to the UK, at 5pm to the USA and Canada.
   -  Someone based in Sao Paulo (GMT-3) can join the action at 8pm *on
   Monday 15 Feb* to retweet the messages to Australia, at 10pm *on Monday
