Join us for an exceptional online discussion *on 19th October 2020*
bringing together for the first time a range of current and former UN
Special Rapporteurs to reflect on the impacts of privatisation and on
renewed momentum and strategies for the public provision of services
related to economic, social and cultural rights. This will be a
cross-sectoral discussion addressing the situation in sectors including
health, education, water sanitation, and housing.

Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, and Executive Director of

*Why? *

After decades of deregulation and privatisation policies around the world,
private actors are playing an increasing role in many sectors, from
education and health, to water, food and housing.  However, concerns that*
privatised systems are gravely threatening the realisation of human rights*
are rising.

In recent years, *dozens of human rights experts and bodies have rung the
alarm bell*, including four UN Special Rapporteurs who have written reports
on the topic. *The issue is becoming all the more critical in the context
of the COVID-19 pandemic, high and rising inequalities, and the ecological
emergency*. More than ever, the current trends towards privatisation and
the dismantling of public services are proving to be untenable. *The time
has come to review human rights concerns across sectors and discuss
alternatives to the dominant discourses*.

*This event will be the first-ever *to bring together a range of current
and former UN Special Rapporteurs and explore how human rights can help
build a joint analysis of privatisation and bring support to resilient,
rights-aligned, gender-inclusive public services and innovative approaches
to realise the common good in a changing world.

POURQUOI?

Après des décennies de politiques de déréglementation et de privatisation
dans le monde entier, les acteurs privés jouent un rôle de plus en plus
important dans de nombreux secteurs, de l'éducation et de la santé à l'eau,
l'alimentation et le logement.  Cependant, on craint de plus en plus que
les systèmes privatisés ne menacent sérieusement la réalisation des droits
humains.

Ces dernières années, des dizaines d'experts et d'agences des droits de
l'homme ont tiré la sonnette d'alarme, dont quatre Rapporteurs spéciaux des
Nations Unies qui ont rédigé des rapports sur le sujet. La question devient
encore plus critique dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19, des
inégalités élevées et croissantes et de l'urgence écologique. Plus que
jamais, les tendances actuelles à la privatisation et au démantèlement des
services publics s'avèrent insoutenables.

Cet événement sera le premier à réunir une série de Rapporteurs spéciaux
des Nations Unies, anciens et actuels, afin d'étudier comment les droits
humains peuvent contribuer à une analyse commune de la privatisation et
soutenir des services publics résistants, fondés sur les droits et tenant

¿PORQUÉ?

altas y crecientes desigualdades y la emergencia ecológica. Más que nunca,
las tendencias actuales hacia la privatización y el desmantelamiento de los
servicios públicos están demostrando ser insostenibles. Ha llegado el
momento de revisar las preocupaciones de derechos humanos en todos los
sectores y de discutir alternativas a los discursos dominantes.

Este evento será el primero que reúna a una serie de relatores especiales
de las Naciones Unidas, actuales y anteriores, y que explore cómo los
derechos humanos pueden ayudar a construir un análisis conjunto de la
privatización y aportar apoyo a unos servicios públicos resistentes,
alineados con los derechos e inclusivos en materia de género, así como
enfoques innovadores para hacer realidad el bien común en un mundo
