People's Health Day - 7 April

Most of us were involved in action on the 7th of April, World Health Day, which PHM renamed "PEOPLE’S health day". Any initiative in the struggle for health that was organised during, or around, the 7th of April can be strengthened by making the link to the global mobilisation. Sharing what you are doing and the main struggles in your country and region can also inspire others.

PHM Philippines

On the 5th of April PHM Philippines sent out a press release: Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere – At What Cost to the People?

PHM Argentine
On the 6th of April, PHM Argentina is part of a meeting of the health movement LACRIMPO (it is part of PHM Latin America) of the Province of Misiones (North of Argentina). There will be debates defending native seeds (against GMOs), what they mean for the health and lives of people. There will have several simultaneous workshops, a panel with different exhibitions, debate, exchange of seeds, etc. There will also be discussions on the serious problem of the privatization of health in the world and they will share the different actions that are being developed.

PHM Kenya
In marking this year’s World Health Day, ‘People’s Health Day’ PHM Kenya joined the people of Ndhiwa in Ndhiwa Sub County, Homa-Bay County located in the rural parts of Western Kenya, this is one of the Counties faced huge health burden coupled with limited access to basic health care services.PHM Kenya got the opportunity to communicate with people and local leaders about the importance of equity in health-care services, for not only the health of individuals, but also for the growth of economies and the society at large, and also mobilized grassroots civil society organizations and health activists in the county of Homa-Bay to take action on issues around social accountability for health.  <https://phmovement.org/peoples-health-movement-kenya-world-health-day/> Read more

PHM Europe
On April 2nd, a PHM Europe group participated in the demonstration and conference “Our Health is Not for Sale!” that took place in Brussels, organized by European Network Against the Commercialization and Privatization of Health and Social Protection. Activists from PHM groups in Belgium, Italy, Croatia and France joined both events, along with members of the Plate-form for Action on Health and Solidarity, Marea Blanca from Spain, local networks part of the Dico32 campaign from Italy and various trade unions and worker and patient collectifs from Belgium, France and the Netherlands, as well as networks of health centers from Belgium. <https://phmovement.org/phm-europe-on-peoples-health-day/>  Read More

PHM Nepal
On the occasion of People's Health Day on April 7, PHM Nepal, in collaboration with RECPHEC and NIHS, organised a discourse on " Reclaiming the universal health coverage" at the Nepal Institute of Health Science (NIHS) Stupa college, Jorpati.

PHM West and Central Africa
Declaration - NO HEALTH FOR ALL WITHOUT PEACE
On the 7th of April, PHM West and Central Africa issued out a declaration denouncing the rise of fundamentalism and violence in several West and Central African countries and calls on leaders to take all steps towards greater regional stability as a prerequisite for health for all. As part of the World Health Day activities, PHMSA held a successful Health System Train the Trainer on the National Health Insurance (NHI) on the 13th and 14th of April 2019 in Cape Town. The workshop was followed by an Annual General Meeting (AGM). One of the PHM Mozambique comrades, from MMI attended the activities as a learning experience.

PHM DRC
On 08 April 2019, in commemoration of the 7th of April, PHM DRC in partnership with the NGO Etoile du Sud and the collective NGO of integrated development in Congo coordinated a first popular forum on the health and the environment. On several topics experts from different ministries as well as civil society organizations paraded for presentations, experiences and comments. Those present included the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Health, without forgetting the decentralization support unit as well as several international NGOs as a doctor of the world, Memisa etc. A Popular Dynamics on the health and environment issue has been created and is composed of professors, politicians and civil society actors.

PHM Italy
A #7April event in Bologna coordinated by Centro di salute internazionale e interculturale included discussions and workshops on how health systems work, the right to health, and health care in urban/city spaces. Part of the activities were dedicated to accessibility of health care for migrants, the reforms facing the Italian National Health System, and differences of health status between different neighborhoods.
