*Major Outcomes of the 71st Session of the World Health Assembly of WHO*
The South Centre is pleased to announce the publication of Policy Brief No.
49 entitled *"Major Outcomes of the 71st Session of the World Health
Assembly of WHO",* authored by Nirmalya Syam, Senior Programme Officer,
Development, Innovation and Intellectual Property Programme (DIIP), and
Mirza Alas, Research Associate, of the South Centre.

The 71st session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) of the World Health
Organization (WHO) took place from 21 to 26 May 2018 in Geneva,
Switzerland. The Assembly adopted several decisions and resolutions
including the adoption of the General Programme of Work (GPW) of WHO for
the period 2019-2023, as well as decisions on addressing access to
medicines and vaccines and their global shortage, and the recommendations
of an overall programme review of the WHO Global Strategy and Plan of
Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property (GSPA-PHI).
Also, the WHA adopted an important resolution to support the preparation of
the first high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
this year on ending tuberculosis (TB) and another resolution supporting the
preparation of a third high-level meeting of the UNGA on the prevention and
control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).  Other significant resolutions
that were adopted include resolutions on digital health, improving access
to assistive technology and addressing the burden of snakebite venoming.
