PHM-Exch> [PHM NEWS] Hightlights of the Regional Workshop on Civil Society Engagement for Health in West and Central Africa – DR Congo 16-18 March 2018

PHM organized a regional workshop on civil society engagement for health in
West and Central Africa from 16 to 18 March 2018 in Kinshasa, Democratic
Republic of Congo. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the PHM
group in the DRC and M3M. 30 participants from Ghana, Mali, Benin, Belgium,
Italy, Gabon and DR Congo took part. The overall goal of the workshop is
strenthen country circles of West and Central Africa.



One of the objectives of the regional workshop is to prepare the 4th
edition of the People’s Health Assembly to be held in Bangladesh. The
launch of the GHW5 and the mobilization for the PHA4 are part of this
dynamic and were covered by Congolese national television. During group and
plenary discussions, the most important thematic axes for the region were
identified: participants looked for Axis 1 and 4 with 4 as a priority.



*Key decisions*

The participation of activists from the most active countries (Gabon,
Benin, Ghana) plus Mali and DR Congo was an asset for the meeting. Several
initiatives have been taken as follow:

(i) the West and Central Africa committee is strengthened with regional PHM
program focal points.

(ii) with the help of PHM's Guide on Right to Health, the right to health
will be assessed at country levels and reports could be  shared during a
strategy workshop possibly in Bangladesh during PHA4

(iii) a regional campaign to be launched as part of the mobilization for
PHA4

(iv) the Committee will write projects and raise funds with the support of
national sections of Gabon and Ghana, as well as with Benin, DRC and
possibly the Global Secretariat;

(v) mobilization for PHA4 will be done by the Committee in conjunction with
active circles

(vi) discussions will continue on the best organizational form for the
actual PHM group in DRC (Mondas) and how it could be more operational and
coordinated

(vii) the focal point of PHM Mali will accelerate the process of setting up
a circle with a coordinating team in his country following his
participation in the workshop
