  PHM AFRICA ACTIVITIES*
*                                                    JULY 2013*

*We share some highlights of PHM activities and plans happening in Africa.
Please feel free to contribute in the next brief.*

*1.PHM AFRICA ACTIVITIES*

*1. **Networking meeting-PHM South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda*

A Joint meeting was held with PHM South Africa, PHM Zimbabwe and PHM Uganda
in Kiboga District, Uganda, March 2013 to share country best practices,
challenges and networking opportunities. The minutes are available for
download on PHM website.

2. *PHM South Africa *

People’s Health Movement South Africa (PHMSA) has been engaged in several
activities over the past 6 months. These include public health forums,
campaigns, networking and strengthening the membership within PHMSA.

*Public Health Forums focused on: *

-Unhealthy Farming

-No People’s NHI (National Health Insurance) Without Community Health Care
Workers

**Campaigns included: *

1. COALITION for a People’s NHI

2. COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS

3. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH CAMPAIGNS focusing on farm workers and
mining workers.

4. COMMUNITY HEALTH EMPOWERMENT CAMPAIGN

**Networking: *

-PHMSA developed a partnership with NEHAWU, one of the largest and most
influential public sector unions in the country.

-PHM-SA partnered with the Eastern Cape NGO Coalition and collaborated with
the Centre for Health, Human rights & Development (CEHURD), which is based
in Uganda, to implement the Go4Health project in OR Tambo health district
of the Eastern Cape. The purpose of GO4Health was to determine the local
social determinants of health, local health problems with hospitals and
clinics and use these findings in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda to
develop a bottom up approach to defining the post MDG global health goals.

-PHM-SA, as a partner of Oxfam International and the Oxfam affiliates,
participated at the Southern Campaigning and Advocacy learning meeting in
Dakar Senegal. PHM-SA will write up a case study covering the PHM-SA
campaign goals, context of campaigning in the South African context and a
brief summary on the achievements, lessons and implications for the right
to health for those living and working in South Africa.

-On the eve of the 2013/14 National Budget Speech coordinated by the
Alternative Information and Development Centre (AIDC) PHM-SA along with 36
other organisations delivered the Call for Budget Justice 2013 to Finance
Minister, Pravin Gordhan. PHM-SA drafted the Call’s section on the
financing for health. Participating in the Call for Budget Justice 2013
assisted PHM-SA to expand its networks and to influence civil society’s
call for greater transparency in health spending in South Africa, in
particular, spending on NHI and primary health care re-engineering.

-The PHM-SA was asked by the Government Spending Watch initiative to
participate in a panel discussion chaired by The Guardian’s Larry Elliott
with Development Finance International, Oxfam International, Save the
Children, Oversees Development Institute and Action Aid. The panel
discussion launched the Government Spending Watch 2013 report, website and
database. PHM-SA felt that this was an important initiative to support
because it is the first initiative of its kind aiming to provide the latest
available information on governments’ spending towards achieving the
Millennium Development Goals.
