AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME
I am very proud to share with you the results of the first month of
monitoring of clinic stocks of certain essential medicines, conducted by
OurHealth Citizen Journalists at 16 clinics countrywide during the month of
June. ****
** **
The Department of Health, academics and other medical professionals
assisted us to choose 22 medicines that they felt were important to
monitor. The list includes TB medicine, ARVs (adults and children), a basic
antibiotic, insulin for diabetes, medication for epilepsy and asthma, some
vaccines and painkillers. ****
** **
We pick 12 medicines from this list these every month to check (this
prevents the clinics from getting accustomed to a stock list of 12 meds).
Each Citizen Journalists (CJ) visits their local clinic once a month.
Permission to do this has been granted by the Director General of Health
and letters to this effect have been sent to all provinces.****
** **
The CJs have an app on their Samsung Galaxy tablets to help them to record
the results as well as to lock in their GPS co-ordinates to verify that
they have actually visited the clinic. They also have to take photos. The
results are sent directly to a central data base co-ordinated by Tendai, a
SADC programme that monitors medicine supplies in SADC countries that we
are part of.****
** **
This month, five of the 16 facilities (i.e. almost one-third) had stock
outs. See below for details.****
** **
We have forwarded the results to the DOH and hope that action will be taken
to prevent stock-outs.****
** **
Thank you to all of you who support the OurHealth Citizen Journalism
project. We really want our journalism to improve the lives of ordinary
people.****
** **
Best wishes****
