The switch from poverty reduction to poverty eradication signalled by the report of the UN’s High-Level panel is welcome, absolutely right and long overdue. But the target the Panel proposes is only a first step towards eradicating in a meaningful sense; and achieving even this will require a fundamental rethink of our whole approach, not only to development, but to the operation of the global economy.
