Review: The International Journal of Cuban Health & Medicine

New issue
now online! Cuba
Tackles Diabetes

In
this issue: a look at Havana’s Immunoassay Center, a
mainstay of Cuba’s biotech sector and creator of a glucometer designed for
tropical climates; along with perspectives on diabetes prevention and
detection, including a discussion of the hygiene hypothesis of type 1 diabetes,
an algorithm to optimize use of costly nuclear cardiology to detect silent ischemia
in diabetes, and the importance of comprehensive care of diabetic mothers to
reduce birth defects.  Plus, a review of
four decades of kidney transplantation in Cuba.

“In Cuba, an integrated, national strategy is one reason for low
diabetes mortality—the lowest in the Americas—with decreases reported in 2011
and 2012.  Nevertheless, prevalence
continues to double every ten years, reaching some 510,000 patients registered
in 2012.”
