Let me add to Neil's interventions that when it comes to technologies the
first and most appropriate step is to make best use of technologies ALREADY
existing and accessible locally. A classic (old) example is educate to use
salt and sugar for home made oral rehydration solutions, rather than for
ready-made sachet of salts for its preparation. A more modern example is to
learn to use m-phones (today available almost everywhere) to take and send
images from a microscope to a reference centre for diagnostic confirmation,
before mobilizing a patient form a rural center to the capital; instead of
looking for new technologies and devices to make the same picture... or use
the same available technology to train local health workers
