The UN thematic consultation on health in the post-2015 UN development
agenda was launched on 5 October 2012. The consultation is organised by a
<http://www.who.int/topics/millennium_development_goals/post2015> task team
led by UNICEF and the World Health Organization with a project secretariat
hosted by WHO. According to the UN team, the challenge is to safeguard
achievements and investments in the current health-related MDGs while also
reflecting new priorities and securing the rightful position of health in
the post-2015 agenda: "The health community must agree on very few goals,
feasible targets and measurable indicators that put health at the heart of
people's understanding of the purpose of development."

Key themes according to the call for papers of the UN consultation:

1. What are the lessons learnt from the health related MDGs?

2. What is the priority health agenda for the 15 years after 2015?

3. Framing the future health goal: How does health fit in the post 2015
development agenda?

4. Measurement of progress towards the health goals: What are the best
indicators and targets?

5. How to ensure a process and outcome that is relevant to the key
stakeholders?

Get involved and contribute directly to the thematic consultation through
the platform provided by the UN team!

Developing an integrated civil society position

- a real challenge - or just impossible?

 <http://www.beyond2015.org/un-thematic-consultations> Beyond 2015 is a
global civil society campaign pushing for a strong and legitimate successor
framework to the Millennium Development Goals. Beyond 2015 is also providing
a platform for civil society to contribute to the nine thematic
consultations being organised by the UN on the post-2015 framework. The
<http://www.medicusmundi.org/> Medicus Mundi International Network (MMI) was
asked to coordinate the drafting of a Beyond 2015 position paper for the
health consultation, based on input by a wide range of civil society
organisations and in particular on the perspectives of the Global South.

We believe that this thematic consultation is a significant opportunity for
building bridges, integrating civil society positions, finding an overall
understanding on the role of health in the future we want. But it has also
the potential to make political positions - and gaps - more visible and to
deepen the existing fragmentation of the global health advocacy community.
So let us see if developing an integrated civil society position is just a
big challenge - or impossible at all.

If you like to participate actively in the discussion and eventually in the
development of a Beyond 2015 position paper, please get in touch with us:
Send your input until 5 November 2012 to
<mailto:healthbeyond2015 at medicusmundi.org> healthbeyond2015 at medicusmundi.org
- either in the form of full papers or just key statements, referring to one
or more of the key themes of the UN consultation. And let us know if you are
interested to join the drafting team coordinated by MMI. Drafting of the
Beyond 2015 position paper will take place during November 2012.

In the meantime, we will use the website
<http://www.bit.ly/mmi-beyond2015call> www.bit.ly/mmi-beyond2015call to
collect and publish civil society input to which we will refer when we
develop the Beyond 2015 position paper.
