Does economic growth improve women's health outcomes?
In a new post for Global Health Check at:
http://www.globalhealthcheck.org/?p=531 Jayati Ghosh, Professor of
Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India, gives some
highlights of her 2011 Lancet Lecture with a focus on the deepening divide
between economic growth and women’s health in India.
Ghosh explains that despite recent rapid growth, health outcomes in India
(measured with a focus on women and girls) are either worse or showing
slower improvement rates than countries with simliar or even poorer income
levels, including Bangladesh and Vietnam. Ghosh blames a misguided economic
policy as well as consistent under investment in public services.
