Dear friends,

Greetings from AMHI!

Accountability and Monitoring in Health Initiative of the Open Society's Public Health Program (AMHI), in collaboration with an advisory group of four experienced community monitoring practitioners [Abhijit Das (CHSJ, India), Abhay Shukla (SATHI, India), Rene Loewenson (TARSC, Zimbabwe) and Walter Flores (CEGSS, Guatemala)], had organized a two and a half day 'Practitioners Convening on Community Monitoring for Accountability in Health' in Johannesburg, South Africa in July 2011. The convening brought together 39 participants from 12 countries around the globe with a mandate to review current experiences in community monitoring and to begin shaping an agenda for strengthening the field. The discussions during the convening were focused on:

* Sharing and synthesizing learning on the contexts for, purpose, methods, reporting and use of different approaches for generation and use of community based evidence for social accountability in health.

* Identifying and critically assessing the existing resources and resource gaps in knowledge, skills and conditions for effective use of community monitoring in health and identify areas for potential action to address the identified gaps.

* Identifying strategies to strengthen the field of community monitoring for accountability in health.

We are pleased to share with you documentation of the proceedings from the convening including:

1. Convening summary report that captures the main points, recommendations, and commitments arising from the convening in a clear and concise manner.

2. Convening minutes that captures, in detail, the presentations and discussions during the convening.
These reports, along with all other resource materials from the convening are accessible on PHP Seminars Website (Click Here<http://health.accel-it.lt/en/seminar/practitioners_convening_on_community_monitoring_for_accountability_in_health/>). Please feel free to share the reports (and the link) with your partners and other interested organizations, networks and practitioners.

In the near future, we will update you on the follow-up actions taken by AMHI, four convening advisors and three other convening participants [Ariel Frisancho Arroyo (CARE Peru, Peru), Renu Khanna (Sahaj, India) and Robinah Kaitiritimba (UNHCO, Uganda)] who volunteered to take forward the work that emerged from the convening recommendations including establishing a Community of Practice.

We welcome your feedback on the reports.

With best regards,

Vinay
