SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS / GENEVA ACADEMY OF INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN
LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS / 09 – 13 MAY 2011* [Contributed with thanks by Aparna
Basnyat, UNDP Bangkok]*:* This advanced course will provide experienced
human rights advocates, staff of NGOs and national human rights
institutions, representatives of governments, and staff of UN bodies and
other international organizations, as well as members of the academia, with
in-depth knowledge on monitoring aspects related to economic, social and
cultural rights (ESC rights), and comprehensive knowledge on how to enhance
their work on monitoring ESC rights. The training includes a dynamic
combination of lectures with hands-on practical work on real country
situations, facilitated by experts experienced in ESC rights work at both UN
and grassroots level. The course aims to suit the needs of experienced staff
of human rights organizations, in particular NGOs, as well as of NHRIs,
staff from UN agencies and diplomats who want to enhance their work on

Global Disability Rights Library project announces a call for organizations
to apply to receive a free digital Global Disability Rights Library (GDRL).
Applications are open to disabled people’s organizations, universities and
agencies in developing countries. Sixty organizations will receive the
digital library to empower them to disseminate valuable disability rights
knowledge and toolkits to their communities. Successful applicants will
have the organizational capacity to become a hub for disseminating
disability rights information and will be inclusive of a diverse disability

*TRAINING OPPORTUNITY / CEDAW FOR CHANGE / WOMEN’S HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION
INSTITUTE / 16 – 20 MAY 2011* [Contributed with thanks by Aparna Basnyat,
UNDP Bangkok]*:* The CEDAW for Change module is open as enrollment as a
one-week intensive module designed to cultivate a better understanding of
the principles of non-discrimination and equality as enshrined in CEDAW and
each State’s obligation to respect, protect and fulfill women’s human
rights. The sessions stresses the multiplicity of forms of discrimination
women from diverse situations experience focused around identity and
interconnectedness, the complex nature of discrimination, the impact of
culture and religion on women’s rights and activism against discrimination.
