Subject: [Commodity Action] Help respond to European consultation on regulating food speculation.

Dear all,

Over recent months, soaring food prices have been fuelled by financial speculation and contributed to unrest and protests in countries like Mozambique, Tunisia and Algeria. Millions of people across the world are being pushed into further hunger and malnutrition as food becomes unaffordable. Making food markets work for the world’s poor is more urgent than ever.

The European Commission is drafting new proposals to regulate financial markets and have launched a public consultation on their proposals. We need ordinary people to respond to this consultation to let the Commission know that we support their efforts to stop excessive speculation on food.

Investment banks, like Goldman Sachs, are lobbying hard for weak regulations to allow them to continue making millions in profit from betting on food prices in financial markets. And so it’s vital that the Commission also hear from as many people as possible that strong and effective regulation is needed to prevent millions facing further hunger and malnutrition.

The consultation closes on 2nd February so please take this action now and together lets send a resounding message to the European Commission that they need to stop bankers betting on hunger.
