For your information and wide circulation (sorry for cross-posting)

The 11th International Women and Health Meeting (IWHM) is happening in Brussels in September 2011, exactly six years after it the 10th IWHM was held in New Delhi in 2005.

The Organising Committee of the 10th IWHM is extremely pleased that the 35 year old feminist space to discuss health issues has been revived ! The first few IWHMs were held in Europe, after which the meetings starting travelling to different continents (Philippines in South Est Asia, Uganda in Africa, Rio de Janeiro in South America, Toronto in Canada, India in Sotuh Asia), so it also interesting that the IWHM is being held once more in Europe after almost two decades.

Please extend all your support to the 11th IWHM by:

marking the dates on your organisational calendar (13th September to 17th September, 2011)
trying to organise your network meetings in a way that people can travel to Brussels without putting pressure on the local organisers to raise funds
putting the travel plan on your organisational activity and budget cycle for 2011
submitting abstracts to the organisers by January 31, 2011
informing others about the 11th IWHM and encouraging them to register as well
The Organising Committee of the 10th IWHM [namely Sarojini N.B., Sabala, Renu Khanna, Padmini Swaminathan, Lakshmi Lingam, Amar Jesani, Philomena Vincent and Manisha Gupte] wishes the 11th IWHM all success !

11th International Women Health Meeting –2011–
“ Women Health and Human Rights. Let us build the Future
The meeting will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 13th to 17th September 2011.

The International Women Health meeting « IWHM » has been for more than 30 years, an international forum of women’s grass rooted organizations, academics, and advocates that promotes women’s health, sexual and reproductive rights.

These meetings have as main objectives :

To gather women from all over the world that are fighting for women’ health and enable them to share their knowledge and experience.
To map out the world women’s health status, the risks, abuses and violence they face ; to give an overview of successes reached to change these situations and identify future actions that need to be undertaken .
To analyze how similar implemented policies and applied medical techniques have different impact in various countries and how different decisions can have similar or negative results.
To broaden and have insight debates on health indicators such as peace, social justice, work, environment, women empowerment, liberty and equal rights.

The focus axes are :

Political and social structures are often based on patriarchal, ancestral constructions that are endangering women’s health. Health should be considered as a fundamental human right.
The cultures, transmission of habits, the transfer of knowledge may sometimes have negative impact on health and particularly on women health.
Health is a vector of various representations and some of them are weakening women’s health. A feminist and global vision is necessary to improve women’s health; one of the means to achieve this is to promote “self-care”
Enforcing community networks and their role as; agents groups for exchange of knowledge and services, women health organization, women’s action’s all over the world and the political decisions that can be then taken.
Women as sole responsible of their right, in freedom and well informed, in full capacity of their civil right regardless of their marital, motherhood status.
We invite you not only to come and participate but also to inform and mobilize any individual, any organization who might show interest in women health and human rights.
