*Open AIDS Journal* (OAIDSJ) Special Issue
*POOLING ARV DRUG PATENTS: A PRO-ACCESS FITTING STRATEGY?*
was just published online in the January 2010 issue (free open access
http://www.bentham.org/open/toaidj/openaccess2.htm) .
This initiative was conceived to join debate around UNITAID Patent Pool
campaign for HIV/AIDS antiretroviral medicines (ARVs), and would aim at
spreading dialogue for equitable action through broad range acknowledged
stakeholders' contributions facing the most relevant criticalnesses and
challenging points.
Actually, this OAIDSJ special issue takes place at the same time when
the final report by the Expert Working Group (EWG) on Research and
Development Financing is being under debate at the WHO's Executive Board
Meeting currently in Geneva.
In this regard, our joint initiative could make even more sense now that the
EWG report passes over some "promising proposals" (including UNITAID patent
pool model) “..either because it is not clear how effectively they could be
expanded into broad solutions or because their design is weak in some
areas…”, and *recommends them for further examination* “…with a view to
either amendment (if possible) and review for implementation or integration
of the high-performing elements into other proposals…”
Your expert criticism over the entire special issue will deeply
be appreciated, along with your judgement whether it would
be worth featuring at your institutional websites.
