I don't quite agree with the point of view of Theodore MacDonald below.
Profit is not for the sake of making profit - and its not a question of
being moral or immoral - it is to motivate people and organisations to
move forward - within a regulatory framework that is certainly a
precondition to guarantee effectiveness and efficiency of private sector
providers in health care - the market is not (never) self -regulatory -
as we have learnt again from the recent crisis of the financial markets.
I think the German approach provides a good model for a healthy Public /
Private Mix of service provision within the health care market - though
there's always room for improvement and any system needs continuous
reform based on feed-back mechanisms with regard to the intended
objectives and targets.
