Pubic Forum:  The Right to Health in the New Ecuadorian Constitution:
successes, challenges, the way forward.  (oct . 15 & 16 , 2008)


During the Global Action Week against Debt and IFIs, the event called 'The
Right to Health in the New Consitution' took place in Quito- Ecuador.  The
event had panelists and representatives from academia, social movements and
NGOs.  The event also had the presence of the Ecuadorian Social Security
(IESS) Director, Ramiro González, with whom a critque and a debate was
established regarding Social Security´s future in Ecuador.

The encounter counted also with the participation of more than 200 people,
including high school and college students.  The event´s objective was to
mobilise the populaton in favor of the acknowledgent of health as a human
right in Ecuador.  Health as a human right includes other rights such as:
water, nature rights, access to medicines, right to adequate food , food
sovereignity, among others.  The aim of the event was also to
articulate efforts between various grassroots org., the academia and
Ecuadorian researchers in order to launch in the short and middle term a
Right to HEalth Campaing.  This campaign will include an active
participation of the population in the elaboration of laws that
will give birth to the mandates established in the actual constitution.

Panelists and event participants also deemed important the *use of different
tools during the campaing*. Tools such as: the New Ecuadorian Constitution,
the findings of several audit comissions (CAIC - Comission Auditing the
Illegitimate Debt in Ecuador) and *the Global Health Watch 2 proposed by PHM
* will be used to consolidate the campaign towards the Right to Health in
Ecuador and the articulation among various sectors and organizations.
