I would like to share the following information with PHM colleagues
regarding an initiative linked to human rights of persons with disabilties.

Even if persons with disabilities constitute up to 10 percent of population,
often they have no or limited access to different services including the
health services. According to the Alma Ata declaration, rehabilitation
should be an essential component of primary health care, but in reality
things are very different. Some persons with disabilities including persons
with mental illness, epilepsy, leprosy face strong stigma and prejudice in
the communities. These are the themes of the Asia Pacific community-based
rehabilitation congress to be held in Thailand in December 2008.

Disability & Rehabilitation team of World Health Organisation (WHO/DAR) in
collaboration with other WHO departments, other UN organisations,
international and national federations and NGOs, is organising the Asia
Pacific Congress on Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) in Bangkok
(Thailand) from 9 to 11 December 2008. More information about the Asia
Pacific CBR congress is available from the following website:
http://www.cbr-asiapacific.org/

In this occasion, a number of pre and post congress workshops on specific
themes are also being organised. As AIFO in collaboration with many other
international and national partners, we are involved in 3 workshops:

(1) CBR and community mental health, to be held from 4 to 5 December 2008

(2) CBR and human rights of persons with disabilities, to be held from 6 to
7 December 2008

(3) CBR and Leprosy to be held from 12 to 13 December 2008

All these 3 workshops will be held at Prince Palace Mahanak hotel in Bangkok,
that is one of the official hotels for the Asia Pacific CBR congress.

More information about the three pre and post congress workshops and their
registration forms are available at the following website:
