**Gender equality and womens economic empowerment are central to development
and poverty reduction. But we are way behind.

**September 25th 2008 world leaders will gather at UN Headquarters in New
York to discuss the state of the world.

**Ask them to act. Ask them to move gender equality and women's economic
empowerment up on the international agenda.*

   - Children of African mothers that have spent five years in primary
education are 40% more likely to live beyond the age of five.

   - If the ration of female to male workers in India were increased by 10%,
GDP would go up by 8%.

   - Gender equality is key to accelerating development in the world. From
improving health and fighting disease, to reducing poverty. From mitigating
hunger, to expanding education. From lowering child mortality, to increasing
access to safe water and ensuring environmental sustainability.
