Dear All

I am delighted to tell you that despite many obstacles and hurdles in
organising and coordinating the Health Panel in Peoples SAARC, our panel
was a resounding success with about 150 people attending the maximum
numbers in any workshop in the Peoples SAARC. The mobilisation was done by
Sirimal from PHM Srilanka. We had panelists from India,Sri lanka, Bangladesh
and Nepal.

There was a huge participation from Sri lanka especially from health
activist working with HIV affected women, sexual minorities, plantation
workers. All of them found a voice in the panel, which otherwise they could
not get in their own country. We look at Srilanka as a health model but
many issues of discrimination within the Srilankan public health system were
highlighted, the issue of conflict and health impact especially to mental
health came out strongly from the floor.

The Indian Womens Health Charter was appreciated at the workshop and
Srilankan Women organisations will be adapting it and translating it in
Sinhalese.

The SAARC peoples declaration has included a demand against privatization
of health services

I will be circulating the report by end of the month.

 in solidarity

Kamayani

We have to start looking at the world through women's eyes' how are human
rights, peace and development defined from the perspective of the lives of
women? It's also important to look at the world from the perspective of the
lives of diverse women, because there is not single women's view, any more
than there is a single men's view."
