PHM activities around the World Health Assembly (WHA) - Geneva, May 2008

Dear Friends,

The People's Health Movement (PHM) is planning for a wide range of activities around the World Health Assembly (WHA) - Geneva, May 2008.

The PHM activities will be organized with several partners among them is the Third World Network (TWN) - as a leader partner for the activities around the WHA; Health Action international (HAI); and the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Please find below the planned activities. We will keep announcing for the details of specific events, especially the seminars during the WHA.

Please communicate with us if you will be participating in the WHA and let us coordinate our activities together.

The PHM plans will include:

1. Pre-WHA Civil Society Workshop (18th May 2008): 

A one-day workshop will be organized prior to the WHA and call for the participation of largest possible number of civil society organizations/networks in addition to key governmental delegations and WHO staff. The workshop will be organized by TWN, PHM, HAI and WCC (please refer to the details of venue and directions[1]).

The main theme of the workshop will be re-vitalizing the Primary Health Care as the best tool to achieve "Health for All". In addition, the workshop will cover other issues including: (please refer to the proposed brief agenda[2])

-          Rational Use of Medicines

-          Influenza Virus and Benefit Sharing

-          Intellectual Property Rights; Innovation and Access (and the Interagency Working Group)

-          The Right to Health, Primary Health Care, Health Systems, & Social Determinants of Health

The workshop will also function to:

-          Consolidate our understanding around the key issues through key-note speeches.

-          Reach a consensus among civil society participants on key statements to be widely distributed during the WHA.

-          Reach agreement around key advocacy plans during the WHA.

 

2. Activities during the WHA: 

Meetings with the formal delegates: This is to use the gathering of representatives of different governments to establish links and to initiate long-termed lobbying activities.

 

           Convening series of seminars at the Palais des Nations during the WHA: till present there are two seminars are being arranged:

o        A joint Seminar with the Geneva NGO Forum for Health that will be on the Primary Health Care. The seminar will be held on 21st of May. 

o        A joint Seminar with the WCC. The date will be announced shortly. It will also address issues related to the health systems, primary health care and immigrants' health. 

 

3. Participation in Geneva Health Forum (25-28 May 2008)

The PHM will be represented by 5 people as sessions' chairs or key-note speakers:

-          Thelma Narayan; Monday, 26 May, Parallel Session on Research to Support Development of Equitable Health Systems

-          David Legge (replaced by Hani Serag); Tuesday, 27 May, Parallel Session on Global Health Education in Action 

-          David Sanders; Wednesday, 28 May, Plenary on Research & Training for Health (Seeds for the Future) 

-          Claudio Schuftan; Wednesday, 28 May, Chair of the Parallel Session on Human Rights and Health Systems

-          Hani Serag; Monday, 26 May, Parallel Sessions on Social Determinants of Health (What is Next?)

- Take tram 13 or 15 to the stop named "Cirque."  Cross the tram tracks and a small garden and then cross the road to reach the  "Moulin Rouge" club.  The "rue des Savoises" runs perpendicular to the Moulin Rouge club.  Turn on to "rue des Savoises" and walk up till you reach "No. 15 rue des Savoises on your left".  There is a small board with the name "La Maison des Associations" (MdA).



- You can also take a taxi or Bus No. 1 to stop at "Cirque" stop right in front of Moulin Rouge. It is about 10 minutes from the train station Gare Cornavin
