PPEHRC ANNOUNCES PARTICIPATION IN GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION

Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) to Hold Actions Across the USA for the Global Day of Action on January 26, 2008 Plans to Bring Thousands to Minnesota to protest the “War at Home and Abroad”during the Republican National Convention in September, 2008
WHAT: A press conference was held on January 12, 2008 by members of the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) from across the United States who gathered this weekend in Minnesota. The press conference announced PPEHRC’s plans for the Global Day of Action on January 26, 2008, and for a March for Our Lives in September 2008 during the U.S. presidential elections.

Organizers of the World Social Forum have called for a Global Day of Action on January 26th, which will involve simultaneous actions around the world with the theme of Another World is Possible. The PPEHRC’s January 12th Minnesota press conference, held in the city where George W. Bush’s successor as Republican presidential candidate will be chosen in September, was carried out in conjunction with press conferences which will be held around the world on January 22, 2008 to announce the Global Day of Action.
PPEHRC and the Global Day of Action As a part of the Global Day of Action on January 26, 2008, poor and homeless families belonging to the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) will be holding actions across the United States to demand the Human Right to Housing, and to demand "Money for Economic Human Rights Not War!" PPEHRC actions will celebrate the 60th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, while highlighting the widespread violations of Economic Human Rights in the richest country in the world.

The PPEHRC will also use the Day of Global Action to draw attention to the cases of two PPEHRC leaders who are facing trial on February 27th, following their arrests in December while protesting the demolition of thousands of units of public housing in New Orleans. PPEHRC National Coordinator Cheri Honkala, PPEHRC organizer J.R. Fleming and a journalist were unlawfully arrested fighting for the Human Right to Housing for Katrina victims in New Orleans shortly before Christmas. They face false federal charges and the possibility of 5 -10 years in prison. With the Global Day of Action, PPEHRC will highlight the widespread crisis in housing and homelessness in this rich country, and attempt to build support in the United States and around the world to keep these two key leaders of the movement of the poor in the US and the journalist out of prison.

The Global Day of Action and the U.S. Presidential Elections

The Week of Global Action culminating on January 26th, timed to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, falls exactly one year before the day that George W. Bush will be stepping down as U.S. president on January 20, 2009. PPEHRC’s activities for the Global Day of Action are a part of the PPEHRC’s massive organizing of the poor of all races across the U.S. to join PPEHRC’s national March for Our Lives during this year's presidential elections here in the U.S. On September 2nd, 2008, the PPEHRC will lead the March for Our Lives: Money for Health Care Not for War during the Republican National Convention here in Minnesota.

PPEHRC has organized the largest marches of the poor and homeless during the past two Republican National Conventions, in which George W. Bush was nominated as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. The March For Our Lives will highlight the lack of serious attention to poverty in the USA in the US presidential campaign, and tie the issues of poverty, homelessness and the denial of health care to millions of people in the US, with poverty and war caused by the US government around the world.

PPEHRC’s activities during the Global Day of Action this month will tie the local struggles for the Human Rights to Housing, Health Care, and other basic necessities across the US, to the PPEHRC’s national efforts to organize the poor of all races into a broad based movement to reclaim our country and set it in a new direction. And as we, the poor of all races in the US, march during the elections later this year, we will insist that: “Another World is Possible and Another United States is Necessary!”

At the press conference, PPEHRC organizations from across the country announced Global Day of Action events led by poor families, public housing residents, immigrants, hip hop artists, students and others in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Chicago, Illinois, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cleveland, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Iowa; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Jose, California and in other locations across the United States. A complete list of PPEHRC activities during that week will be publicized soon.
