Training Opportunity - Applications Invited
IPHU and PHM regional coordination group of the Middle East and North Africa in collaboration with the Association for Health and Environmental Development (AHED) invite applicants for the next IPHU short course for health activists.
Entitled "The Struggle for Health", the course will be held at the International Scout Center, Cairo - Egypt
from the 22nd of March to the 1st of April 2008.

Objectives

The IPHU short courses are to enable younger health activists to make new connections, share experiences and study together. They aim at strengthening the global network of people's health activists.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes:

  a.. the struggle for health: achievements, strategies and new directions;
  b..  working with communities and with grass roots health organizations;
  c.. comprehensive primary health care: achievements, lessons and new directions;
  d.. the political economy of health: globalization, the WTO, the IMF and the WB; local issues and global pressures;
  e.. the right to health: principles, achievements and new directions;
  f.. people's health and the environmental struggle;
  g.. research: part of the problem and part of the solution;
  h.. social determinants of health (poverty, oppression and hierarchy; alienation and exclusion; racism and sexism; materialism) and the struggle for health. 
Approach to learning

  a.. Start with the struggle for health
  b.. Teach and learn in partnership
  c.. Knowledge is for practice and purpose
  d.. New ideas must be used
  e.. Activism is an ethical commitment
  f.. Learn new ways of being (as well as new facts and theories)
  g.. Refresh, enquire, research
  h.. Leadership: judgment which inspires; the courage to take risks
  i.. Learn to listen to learn
  j.. Steer our own learning
  k.. Grow the skills and habits of life long learning
  l.. Learn to teach; teach to learn
  m.. Stay with the struggle for health
The course will involve: pre-reading; lectures, small group discussions, debates, workshops and follow up study.  Resource materials will take the form of hard copy readings, lecture notes and websites. In addition, the course will provide a unique exposure for all participants through engaging the course with a planned Regional Health Forum that will be held on the last 2 days of the course (31 March - 1 April 2008). 

Who is the course planned for?

  a.. A total of 60 participants are expected.
  b.. The enrolment policy aims to achieve:
    a.. geographical mix:  10 participants from Egypt (the host country), 30 from other countries of the region (Middle East and North Africa), 10 from South Europe and 10 from Sub-Saharan Africa;
    b.. gender balance;
    c.. diversity of involvements: community based organizations, NGOs, universities, government officials, etc; and
    d.. diversity of skills, interests and educational backgrounds.
  c..  Applicants should have a university degree.
  d.. Priority, with respect to enrolment, will be given to
    a.. Younger people;
    b.. Primary Health Care and public health practitioners;
    c.. People with a track record as health activists within the People's Health Movement, in particular, people who have been actively involved in organizations which are part of the People's Health Movement. 
Faculty

Faculty members will be a mix between high-profile academic personnel and health activists of a sound experience. In addition, a relative large number of the PHM resource persons and members of its Steering Council will be participating.

Language

The course will be taught in English and Arabic (simultaneous translation).

* It covers the all the training materials; the lunch and coffee breaks during the training days and cultural and social programs.

** Supported by the PHM global secretariat for all participants.

A limited number of scholarships are available. They may cover the travel costs and/or accommodation. Applicants should seek such support from sponsors in their own countries in the first instance.

The current course is partially supported by Oxfam/Novib.

The International Scout Center - 4 Youssef Abbas St., Nasr City, Cairo, Egypt.
