05 December 2007
For Immediate Release

Grassroots and CSOs support the call for a People’s Protocol on Climate
                                 Change

Hundreds of signatures have already been gathered from grassroots and
organizations worldwide supporting the People’s Declaration on Climate
Change which calls for, among others, a People’s Protocol on Climate
Change.

The People’s Declaration on Climate Change was drafted and accepted by
170 participants from the Asia Pacific region during the Asia Pacific
Research Network’s Conference on Natural Resources in Bangkok, Thailand
last October 2007, saw the need for a People’s Protocol on Climate
Change in recognition of the fact that the Kyoto Protocol failed to
offer a sustainable solution to the issue and did not allow sufficient
voice from the marginalized sectors who suffer the greatest blows from
climate change.

The People’s Protocol on Climate Change is founded on people’s
sovereignty over natural resources and sustainable economic framework as
viable solutions to the climate change issue.

Led by IBON Foundation, Aidwatch, Indonesians’ Human Rights Defenders
and the ILPS-Indonesia (AGRA, FMN, INDIES), and other people’s
organizations in Denpasar, Bali, a series of workshops has been held
which allowed people to discuss, critique and adopt the People’s
Declaration on Climate Change. On December 7, hundreds of peasants,
women, youth, fisherfolk, indigenous people, workers and CSOs will again
gather in Inna Bali, Denpasar to discuss and adopt the People’s
Declaration on Climate Change.

Five thousand more signatures are expected to endorse the People’s
Declaration on Climate Change in a nationally coordinated people’s
actions in 14 key cities in Indonesia, particularly in Jakarta,
Yogyakarta, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, North Sumatra,
South Sumatra and Lampung on December 10, International Human Rights
Day.

All these events will lead up to a conference in Copenhagen in 2008
which will come up with the finalized version of the People’s Protocol
on Climate Change, led by Pesticide Action Network International,
People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty and the Asia Pacific Research
Network in time for consideration and inclusion for the post-Kyoto
agreement.###
