Case studies of programmes addressing social determinants of health and equity

This initiative aims at compiling detailed case studies of public health programmes addressing social determinants of health in order to have a specific public health impact at a population level, such as level and distribution of infectious disease, reproductive health and/or noncommunicable diseases outcomes. 

The case study focus should be on the process of implementation. Five types of processes are of particular interest:

·         Going to scale: the challenges faced in moving from small scale pilot programmes to widespread interventions. 

·         Managing policy change: the challenges associated with policy formulation and change particularly for policies that are likely to benefit the poor and vulnerable, the influence of the political environment, the role of individuals as policy champions, managing opposing professional views. 

·         Managing intersectoral processes: including stewardship challenges in working with other sectors, difficulties in coordination. 

·         Adjusting design: adjustments made to the original programme design during implementation, issues of sequencing elements of the programme, effects of stakeholder views upon design. 

·         Ensuring sustainability: issues in securing ongoing financial support for the programme, as well as promoting institutional sustainability.
