A new Director General for WHO is about to be elected! -

PHM Communication-1

Dear PHM members and sympatizers,

Warmest greetings from the Global Secretariat Office in Cairo!

The PHM, represented by its WHO-Advocacy Circle and Global Secretariat, has initiated a process aiming at assisting and enabling a more informed voting during the process of election of the coming WHO Director General. The initiative entails many activities and processes, amongst them are:

§ Publishing an article on the expected role of the WHO Director General. The article is composed of two main parts. The first is an overview of the global health situation and the influence of different health-concerned global institutions. The second part is explicitly draws on PHM's expectations and demands from the health-concerned international bodies, among them WHO and its director general. The article has been drafted, based on a PHM collective process, and was sent to the Lancet. It has been accepted and is scheduled for publication shortly.

§ Drawing-up profiles for the thirteen candidates for the position of WHO Director General. The profiles are being made based on available data on the candidates from various sources. The profiles concern the candidates' academic and professional background, achievements, publications, and positions. The profiles are being finalized and will be posted in the PHM website shortly (www.phmovement.org ).

§ Obtaining the candidates' position regarding specific issues concerning people's health. This has been started by drafting twelve key questions circulated to all candidates electronically. Candidates' responses are being obtained gradually and are immediately posted on the PHM website. We should mention here that this process has shown a high degree of cooperation from many candidates. PHM takes the chance thank the candidates for this.

Until now, SEVEN candidates have responded with full answers to the PHM questions. The candidates' responses have been uploaded on the PHM website.

§ Developing a PHM position statement. Based on the candidates' responses to the mentioned questions, as well as their profiles, PHM will undergo a process of analysis f these materials and will draft its position statement. The statement will be circulated to all the members of WHO's Executive Board. The statement will be sent supported by the candidate's responses and the developed profiles.

All PHM members, please feel free to send your ideas, suggestions and comments on the process.

Other circulars will follow to report about progress.

Yours Sincerely,

Hani Serag
