** id21 insights health #7, August 2005, Responding to the health
workforce crisis **

The shortage of health workers with the right expertise and experience
has reached crisis levels in many developing countries. The ability of
health services to deliver care depends on the knowledge, skills and
motivation of health workers. Without enough skilled staff in the right
place at the right time health systems cannot function effectively and
populations are left without the treatment and support they need.

id21 insights health #7 examines the challenges facing national health
systems and identifies what needs to be done in response to the growing
crisis.

Guest Edited by James Buchan, articles include:

* James Johnson: tackling international health worker recruitment
* Delanyo Dovlo: introducing substitute health workers in Africa
* Eldryd Parry: volunteers can contribute to health care
* Gilles Dussault: committing donors to building health workforces
* Kaspar Wyss: finding the answers to Chad's health workforce crisis
