This month the struggle around health care in the US heats up: Health Care 
eliminated for poor; PPEHRC to send emergency Human Rights Brigades; 
Medicaid Recipients in KWRU Join with Hospital Workers of 1199C 

KWRU marched from City Hall to the Convention Center today, carrying signs 
that said, "MY LIFE MATTERS," and "Medicaid Cuts = Thousands Dead."  The march, 
which happened during rush hour, fed into the National Union of Hospital and 
Health Care Employees' march and culminated with a huge rally inside.  In the 
packed hall at the Convention Center, KWRU showed solidarity as the union 
unanimously voted to strike if their contract is not resolved by June 30th. The 
major issue in the contract is their inadequate health benefits.  Henry Nicholas, 
President of 1199c, spoke of the special relationship between 1199c and KWRU, 
who share a common fight for the right to health care, living wage jobs and 
other basic necessities.
 
Cheri Honkala, founder of the KWRU, and Medicaid recipient with serious 
health problems, pledged before the crowd KWRU's support of the union's upcoming 
strike and their ongoing struggle for a decent life with good jobs and health 
care.  Other speakers of the evening were Rich Trumpka, Donna, the vice 
president, the head of the central labor council, and the teachers union, and the 
transportation workers union.

She shared with the crowd the PPEHRC's national struggle against the Medicaid 
cuts, and spoke of KWRU members, some sitting in the audience, who suffer 
from serious health problems and who will lose their health insurance or have it 
seriously reduced. 
 
Starting July 1st, Pennsylvania Medicaid recipients will be reduced to two 
hospital stays a year and 6 prescriptions each year, regardless of what kind of 
care they require to stay alive. People across Pennsylvania will be left to 
become seriously handicapped or to die as a result of these cuts. And these cuts 
are beginning to take place across the US. 

Already, 300,000 people have lost their medical insurance in Tennessee. 
400,000 others have had their coverage reduced.  These cuts will serve as the 
national model for the elimination of the right to health ACROSS the USA. These 
cuts take away what little right we have to health care in this the richest 
country in the world, a country with the world's best hospitals and health care 
facilities.
 
On June 14th, KWRU will join Jobs with Justice and the Transportation Workers 
Union in the fight for health benefits for workers.  Then, on June 20th, in 
an emergency effort to prevent the loss of life which will result from these 
cuts, the KWRU and PPEHRC will send an emergency human rights brigade to 
Tennesee. On June 26-27th, the KWRU will send a statewide human rights brigade to the 
Governor's house and to Harrisburg.  And on July 4th weekend, as Cheri 
pledged tonight, the KWRU will be back in Philadelphia to support the hospital and 
health care workers of 1199c.
 
Tuesday at 1pm at the KWRU office, Medicaid recipients, people without health 
care, and others who are concerned about the right to health care in this 
country will gather for a planning meeting about how to fight the mediciaid cuts 
in PA. For those of us in this movement who depend on Medicaid to stay alive, 
this is an emergency meeting to save our lives.

Receptores de Medicaid de la KWRU se juntan con los Trabajadores Hospitales 
de la 1199c

Hoy la KWRU marchó del ayuntamiento de Filadelfia al Centro de Convenciones, 
llevando letreros que dijeron "Mi Vida es Importante" y "Recortes a Medicaid = 
Miles muertos".  La marcha, que se realizó durante las horas punta, se juntó 
con la marcha de la Unión Nacional de Empleados de Hospitales y terminó con 
una manifestación grande adentro del Centro.  En la sala abarrotada la KWRU 
mostró su solidaridad mientras el sindicato votó unánimemente a ir en huelga si su 
contrato no está resuelto el día 30 de junio. El tema más importante que se 
debate del contrato es su falta de beneficios de salud.  Henry Nicholas, 
Presidente de la 1199c, habló de la relación especial entre la 1199c y la KWRU 
quienes comparten una lucha común para el derecho a seguro medico, a trabajo con 
salarios justos y otras necesidades básicas.

Cheri Honkala, la fundadora de la KWRU y una receptora de Medicaid con 
problemas serios de salud, prometió ante la muchedumbre el apoyo de la KWRU de la 
huelga inminente y de su lucha continua para una vida decente con trabajo y 
cuidado medico bueno.  Otros oradores de la noche eran Henry Nicholas, presidente 
de la Union de Empleados de Salud y Hospitales, y otros.

Ella compartió con la muchedumbre la lucha nacional de la PPEHRC contra las 
recortes de Medicaid y habló de miembros de la KWRU (algunos en la audiencia) 
quienes sufren de problemas con su salud y quienes van a perder su acceso a 
seguro medico o sufrirlo severamente reducido. 

Comenzando el primer día de julio el Medicaid de Pennsylvania va a reducir lo 
acceso permitido a sólo dos estancias en el hospital por año y a sólo seis 
recetas por año, no importa lo que el paciente necesite para sobrevivir.  Gente 
de Pennsylvania será dejado a volverse minusválido o a morir como resuelto de 
los recortes. Y los recortes repetirán por todo los Estados Unidos.

300,000 personas ya han perdido su seguro medico en el estado de Tennessee. 
La cobertura de aún más 400,000 ha sido diminuida. Estos recortes constarán del 
modelo nacional para quitar el derecho a salud por todo los Estados Unidos. 
Estos recortes quitarán lo poco derecho que tenemos ahora en el país más rico 
del mundo, un país con los mejores hospitales y instalaciones de salud del 
mundo.

El día 14 de junio, la KWRU se reunirá con Jobs with Justice (Trabajo con 
Justicia) y la Transportation Workers Union (la Unión de Trabajadores de 
Transporte) en su lucha para beneficios de salud para los trabajadores.  Entonces, el 
día 20 de junio, en un esfuerzo de emergencia para impedir la pérdida de vida 
que con certeza resultará con estos recortes, la KWRU y la PPEHRC mandarán una 
brigada de derechos humanos a Tennessee.  Los días 26 y 27 de junio la KWRU 
enviará una brigada a la casa del Gobernador de Pennsylvania y a la ciudad de 
Harrisburg.  Y, durante el fin de semana del día 4 de julio, como Cheri

en el programa Medicaid para sobrevivir, ésta es una reunión para salvar 
nuestras vidas.
